Creative Balance: Jon Nathanson

We’re delighted to introduce you to Jon Nathanson, an award-winning artist and architect whose work crosses the traditional boundaries between built and visual arts. His paintings have been featured at Yale, the University of Maryland, and in corporate and private collections across the U.S.

The concept of movement has always been a focal point for Jon’s craft. He explains, “My work is largely influenced by figurative studies, balancing representation with abstraction. I find connection between my work as an architect and artist; their intention is the same.”

Jon’s sculptures pictured below, Dancer 1 Through Dancer 4, were created for a 2014 exhibit at the Brooklyn Academy of Music entitled “Movement and Motion.” The sculptures reflect the theory and implementation of the concept of folding.

Movement has taken on new meaning for Jon since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018. “I am of the opinion that movement of any kind is essential in living with PD,” he says. “My experience with struggles in movement has been a metaphor for creating art and pursuing wellness.”

PWF’s Creative Balance series highlights the creative voices and talents of those impacted by PD, and we welcome submissions from our community. Have something to say, sing, paint or photograph? We would love to hear from you! Contact us with your work or idea. In sharing your talents, you’ll inspire and help empower others.
