We are excited to invite you and your loved ones to participate in our inaugural Parkinson’s 101 Week—a special lecture series designed for those newly diagnosed with PD. Our experts will cover the essentials of managing life with Parkinson’s, including medication and treatment, exercise and nutrition, and emotional wellbeing. Participants can connect and build community while gaining information, tools, and a support system that can empower those affected by PD to live their fullest lives.
Parkinson’s 101 Week is open to our newly-diagnosed members who are welcome to attend with immediate family unless otherwise noted. We strongly encourage participants to attend all of our scheduled programming to make the most of this opportunity. If you have time constraints, we suggest prioritizing the events marked with an (*). The schedule at a glance:

*Decoding Parkinson’s: What You Need to Know
Presented by Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed
Monday, April 27, 5-7 pm
Dr. Jimenez-Shahed, Mt. Sinai Neurology Professor, Co-Chair of the Parkinson Study Group, and Bandeen Center Medical Advisory Board Member, will discuss diagnosis and symptoms, medication and treatments, non-motor symptoms, and the importance of communicating well with your doctor.
Organizing Your Life with Parkinson’s
Presented by Dr. Rose Gallagher and Julie Safar, LCSW

Who should attend: newly-diagnosed PD members, along with any immediate family members who would like to join
Rose Gallagher, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., The Bandeen Center’s Fitness Advisor and professor of physical therapy, and Julie Safar, LCSW, social worker at the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Center at Mount Sinai, will share practical guidance on daily living with PD, finding an exercise routine, and creating a care management team to support you and your loved one on your Parkinson’s journey.

Dr. Di Rocco, Neurology Professor at Hofstra Northwell, System Director, Neurology, Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders at Northwell Health, and Bandeen Center Medical Advisory Board Member, will lead an intimate discussion with the family members of those with PD on how a Parkinson’s diagnosis affects the whole family—and how greater awareness can foster compassion and connection.
*More than a Motor Disorder: The Emotional & Identity Side of PD
Presented by Dr. Shannon O’Neill and Dr. Allison Waters
Friday, May 1, 5-7 pmWho should attend: Newly-diagnosed members with PD (please note family members may not attend this session)
Mt. Sinai psychologists Shannon O’Neill, PhD, and Allison Waters, PhD, will review the emotional impact of Parkinson’s, including depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and identity changes, while offering practical coping tools and resources to support resilience. Please note, this session is limited to newly diagnosed people with PD only.
Diet’s Role in Parkinson’s Disease
Presented by Zari Ginsburg, MS, RDN

Who should attend: newly-diagnosed PD members, along with any immediate family members or care partners who would like to join
Our resident nutritionist, Zari Ginsburg, will provide an overview of emerging research on how nutrition can be used to manage symptoms of PD. This talk is open to all members, their immediate family, and care partners.
