Of the 1 million people living with Parkinson’s in the U.S., approximately 40,000 of them are 50 years old or younger. Known as Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD), this rare condition presents certain challenges for individuals who are still managing careers, raising children, or caregiving for aging loved ones. Building community and awareness of YOPD is essential, which is why last month, PWF Fitness Advisor Dr. Rose Gallagher volunteered for Shaken, Not Deterred, a gathering for New York’s YOPD network.
Sponsored by the American Parkinson Disease Association, the Marlene Meyerson JCC and the Parkinson’s Foundation, this momentous all-day event included interactive sessions, panel talks, and expert advice for how to thrive with YOPD at home, work, and beyond. Dr. Gallagher was invited to facilitate a table talk about the benefits of YOPD and fitness. A veteran physical therapist who is passionate about helping to improve the lives of those living with PD, Dr. Gallagher found the event to be inspiring. “Every panel of speakers was made up of people with Parkinson’s, including the panel of healthcare professionals” she explains. “To hear the point of view from both sides was really insightful. During the breakout sessions, each attendee with PD could ask questions that were specific to their own Parkinson’s journey, which was really meaningful. I was honored to be included.”
Thank you, Rose. We’re proud of our PWF team and all the ways they lift up the Parkinson’s community!
